The Foundation honoured a prominent board-member on 3 November
Foundation Netherlands-Romania honoured Mr. Wim van Eekelen, one of our prominent board-members, with a special debate. Wim van Eekelen is one of the most important Dutch personalities dedicated to the shaping and development of the European Union. Among many other functions and responsibilities at national and European level, Wim van Eekelen was Secretary General of Western European Union, Minister of Defence, Senator, State Secretary at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the European Movement, former representative of the Dutch Government to the European Convention.
Mr Wim van Eekelen was the key-speaker of a debate titled: “The economic crisis, refugees and tensions at the EU external borders. The need for Solidarity in Europe”
The event took place on 3 November 2015 and it was co-organised with the Embassy of Romania to The Kingdom of The Netherlands, which also hosted the debate.
Next to the Romanian Ambassador Mrs. Ireny Comaroschi and Mr Van Eekelen, two other board members of the Foundation joined the discussions as speakers:
– Prof. Dr. Jaap de Zwaan, Lector European Integration at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, em. professor of the Law of the European Union at Erasmus University Rotterdam, former Director of Clingendael Institute;
– Jaapjan Rijlaarsdam, Vice-Head of Communications at Inspectorate Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, former Head Corporate Communication Dutch Ministry of Transport, former senior adviser Dutch Government Information Service, Prime-minister’s Office.
Around 70 people were present at the event, among them students, representatives of the diplomatic circles and the international community in The Hague, civil servants, NGOs and other interested persons.
